Andy Warhol once asked, “Isn’t life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?” He wasn’t talking about photography, but the same sad cynical truth could be said about pictures as well. One hundred and eighty-two years into the medium, an original photograph is hard to come by. The main reason for that is that photographs capture life and life doesn’t change that much. So why bother? The joy of photography is not its novelty rather it’s ability to reconstruct life. Through exposing film to light and dipping the film in chemicals, then projecting the image onto paper and dipping the paper into chemicals, we get, not something that is new, but something from the past brought back to life. Resurrection is a powerful metaphor. This month, we invite you to explore the revived moments of Gary Hall’s Contemporary Luminism at Amy E. Tarrant Gallery or “Summer of Love” by Nathan Farb at Burlington College or Scott Brightwell’s large scale black and white photography at The Maltex.
