“Whenever I’m alone with you, you make me feel like I am home again,” The Cure put it best. They weren’t speaking of art per se. (If you’re a regular reader of this spot, my quotes rarely do.) But they might as well have been. Art should make us feel something: “Whenever I’m alone with you, you make me feel like I am whole again.” It is the season of Joy, but it’s also the season of objects. This First Friday, I hope that when you are checking Marc Awodey’s paintings at Daily Planet, Ray Voide’s work at Skinny Pancake, P J De Villiers' drawings at Kasini House, or Tarrah Krajnak’s photo-based work at SEABA Gallery, I hope you ponder how these objects make you feel in comparison to the things you buy at Walmart, Kmart, or the Quik-E-Mart. The scene, particularly in December, may feel like a big Art Mart with all the holiday sales and group shows, but at the end of the day when you take that painting home, I hope you can sing along with The Cure: “Whenever I’m alone with you, you make me feel like I am young again. Whenever I’m alone with you, You make me feel like I am fun again” Pick up a copy of Art Map Burlington, First Friday Art Walk’s official publication, and the guide to art in Burlington to see a list of participating venues.
