“When something is new to us, we treat it as an experience. We feel that our senses are awake and clear. We are alive,” said Jasper Johns, whose iconic 1954-1955 painting Flag (42 1/4″x60 5/8″; encaustic, oil, and collage on fabric on plywood (three panels)) caused many people to see the Stars and Stripes in a new way.

Every First Friday is a chance to experience the new in Burlington’s art scene. On the eve of the USA’s 233rd birthday, Pine Street in the South End is alive with art and music. First stop, our newest venue, The JOY Gallery shows us Anne McKenna’s “Beauty” (abstract color paintings). Pine Street Art Works’ show of W. David Powell’s “Compendium” entices with color and science. Speaking Volumes presents work by Greg Mamczak (image) followed by music to watch the fireworks by with 4 bands. Downtown also has much to offer, including Jude Bond’s exploration of the prehistoric Champlain Basin at 215 College and Steven P. Goodman’s “81 Days” of paintings at the Flynn Center’s Amy E. Tarrant Gallery.

First Friday Art Walk is a community event that takes place the first Friday of each month throughout the city of Burlington. The event is free and open to anyone. Between thirty and forty art venues are open between 5PM and 8PM for the Art Walk. Some venues have openings, talks, music, or other special activities. Others are simply open late. Individuals start their art walk by visiting any participating venue and picking up a copy of Art Map Burlington, the official publication of First Friday Art Walk.
