Opening the Heart to D-3

Nestling in the South End behind Speeder and Earl’s is a warren of studios and creative ventures (and an auto body shop--but they look like hip auto workers). Over two years ago, Studio D-3 and The One Wall Gallery took up residence up a flight of stairs in the M.C. Escher-esque complex of red brick buildings squeezing the parking lot behind Burlington’s most famous non-Seattle-based coffee chain. Marie Davis, resident artist in polymer clay jewelry and sculpture, shares the space with two other artists, Ginny O’Reilly and Carol Norton. Studio D-3 is a long, open space accommodating The One Wall Gallery, whose expanse of white wall was at the time of this writing awaiting Sara Altieri’s show. Facing this are western-facing windows running the length of the studio, suffusing the space with light.

The front of the studio houses works by Aaron Stein and Marie’s polymer clay jewelery. Stein’s New York State made from New York license plates (3’ x 3’6”, wooden state outline covered with vintage New York state plates) is just one of his humorous found object pieces. When asked by a visitor if he had any Vermont State bracelets, he produced two from his pocket two, inch-wide strips of sanded-smooth, identifiably Vermont state accoutrement. No jail labor was employed in the making.

Marie Davis’ polymer clay jewelery is marvelously detailed, but her sculptures are arresting masterpieces of minutiae. A heart-shaped box mounted on a crushed velvet 12” x 12” square frame opens like a Florentine triptych. The two doors of the 8” hollowed out heart of polymer clay open on metal clasps to reveal a chambered room housing an easy chair, reading table with miniature working lamp, and a poly-clay book. The entire interior of the heart is adorned with dozens and dozens of myriad tiny flowers jostling against each other below a sky blue background.

Art walkers should step up and check out Studio D-3 and The One Wall Gallery.
