Brian Zeigler’s Building Series

Work of Montpelier artist Brian Zeigler graces the cover of Art Map Burlington this month. Zeigler studied life drawing and sculpture at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. After taking several years off, in 2006 he began drawing and painting again. His most recent works have featured ink birds on watercolor washes and charcoal and watercolor portraits. In July, Linda Setchell interviewed him about his Building Series.

How did get the idea to create these pieces?
I like the idea of building my city with the magazine and the collage and see it as a collage first and then totally cover it up with the charcoal and use the magazine images to connect the charcoal. It was way to build a city and a drawing that I thought was interesting. I like how there’s open space and that on the surface it’s a line drawing. I love to draw. Making drawing interesting is kind of the goal for me. Making the building as a layered piece made the drawng process interesting for me.

What’s up with the masking tape?
I was using masking tape to tape down other paintings, and I had the idea of trying to draw on the masking tape itself. I liked the idea of making the drawing not look like it was on masking tape. I’m also into using inexpensive materials and seeing what I can do with them. You can find magazines anywhere and masking tape is pretty cheap. Also, I’ve always loved collage, but it’s always been too literal and this was a way to remove that and make them interesting.

Is there something you want people to know about this series?
We our lives in lines. The drawings are a means of expressing how we feel inhabiting buildings and cities. It’s different than living in nature where straight lines are rare.
