ART EVENT 15th Annual Why, oh, why do we love Art Hop? I mean really. Why? There’s all these people, all this walking, all this art to sort through. And then, there’s the drinking, partying, music, running into people you haven’t seen in months and more walking. The 15th edition of the South End’s art bonanza-the neighborhood’s potluck of visual plenty, if you will-is set to kick off September 7th and 8th. Unlike previous years when Art Hop was limited to a single weekend, organizers are unleashing the event over the entire month of September. Great! More walking now over a longer period of time. During Art Hop, you can walk to Green Door Studios where John Lafalce & Drew Luan Matott will perform an interactive piece of art. The public will be invited to batter and deep-fry books as a commentary on America’s obsession with an unhealthy lifestyle, unstable foreign policy and blatant disregard for intellectualism. The fried books will be vacuum wrapped and given to each participant. Folks are encouraged to fry their own books, but if you forget to bring one you may have to walk home to get it. You can then walk over to Box Studios and over to Jordan Silverman Photography. You can walk down to Flynn Avenue and check out what’s going on at FLYNNDOG and VCAM. You’ll need to do some more walking to see Michael Nedell’s giant Newton’s Cradle or to join Dostie in his projectile painting. But do you see what I mean about the walking? So much to do, so much to see. Now, it is true that I am lazy. Art Hop only comes once a year. Art Hop is the last hurrah of summer before we slip into fall. It’s the last chance to take it all in before we become pre-occupied with the run-run of the Holidays, before we lapse into the mellow hum-drum of winter. Walking is as much a way of being as it is a form of transportation. “It is not talking but walking that will bring us to heaven,” said English religious libertarian Matthew Henry or as Lao Tzu put it, “Meandering leads to perfection.” |
