Viewing at VCAM

Vermont Community Access Media (VCAM), just behind FLYNNDOG, tucked into the 208 Flynn Avenue complex offers a broad range of multi-media resources for members of the community. VCAM is dedicated to providing training and state of the art media tools to assist individuals in expressing themselves personally, artistically and politically. In addition to operating a public access cable channel, VCAM also provides free equipment and facility rentals for any non-commercial purpose. Additionally, VCAM offers free media workshops to help community members learn more about media options available to them.

The comfortable space has a well-lit and open reception area with meeting areas behind. The control room and filming rooms border the back of the suite. Skylights pour natural light into the area, reflecting off the hardwood floors and covering the space in a warm wash of brightness. With jazz playing in the background and local artwork warming up the walls, the space has the feeling of a laid back Saturday morning. It is an attractive mix of organic and modern, with contemporary lights and furnishings contrasting against warm walls and the soft jade-green plants in the cozy space.

Jane Horner, curator for VCAM, feels that the space teaches her how it can be filled, “The works create an unexpected or emergent dialog. This kind of surprise is what enchants me, and can determine the whole gist or heart of the matter,” says Horner. The dialog Horner talks about can be felt upon entering the warm space. The neutral walls provide the perfect canvas for the striking works of art displayed. The rotating exhibits present work by local artists such as Roger Coleman, Jane Horner, Jim Nickel, Sophie Quest, and Aaron Stein, whose group show “Time’s Edge” runs through February 24.
