ON THE COVER: Lois Eby

Last November at Chelsea’s Dillon Gallery, Makoto Fujimura performed a live painting in collaboration with pianist Jerzy Sapieyevski. As Fujimura lowered his brush to the paper canvas, Sapieyevski played counterpart: each new gesture presented a new rhythm; each new color, a new note. Gallery owner Valerie Dillon heralded the moment as a “visionary inquiry into post-modern artistic expression.”

The connection between music and painting goes back centuries. An Italian musician and computer technician claimed to have found a musical score in Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper. (Is there anything not hidden in that painting?) Paul Klee was as talented a musician as he was a painter. Wassily Kandinsky said, “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammer, the soul is the piano with the strings.” More recently, musicians like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Burlington’s own Mikey Welsh have taken up painting with a great deal of success.

The connection between painting and music, specifically American Jazz, is at the heart of Lois Eby’s work. Her colors are often primary. Her compositions are rich with syncopated rhythms. Brushwork is informed by Zen ink paintings and Asian calligraphy. The result is a beautiful harmonic where paint plays against white space, gesture dances across the canvas, and music can be seen through the eyes.

A detail of Lois Eby’s Song in Three Parts graces the cover of Art Map Burlington this month. You can see more of her work February 1st to 24th at 215 College Artist Cooperative Gallery or online at www.loiseby.com
