CALLS TO ARTISTS

January is that time of year when the world gets back to work after what seems like a never ending barrage of holiday-inspired idleness. This is particularly the case for artists. To get our creative readers motivated, we’ve decided to report on a couple of promising calls to artists.

SCULPTCYCLE
The Montpelier Downtown Community Association is looking for 35 to 50 artists to create sculptures made with bicycle parts that will be on display around downtown Montpelier, June through September 2008, then auctioned off in October. As compensation, artists will receive: $250 when their proposal is accepted; $250 when their SculptCycle is delivered; 20% of auction price; webpage presence with image of SculptCycle, bio info, and website link; national, regional, and local promotion of event; free tickets to opening and closing events; and potential to win prize money totaling $4500. Proposals are due January 30. You can find more information on the website, www.sculptcycle.com, under the “Artist” page.

FIRST FIFTY
Art Map Burlington and Art’s Alive invite artists in participate in the 2008 edition of First Fifty, February 1-29. This Burlington tradition is an open exhibition of work by the first fifty artists drawn by lottery. The annual event brings in a variety of art by local artists and is a truly democratic exhibition of the people. Art Map Burlington and Art’s Alive continue the tradition and invite artists to participate. It is an opportunity for us to be exposed to local talent that has yet to appear on the radar and it is an opportunity for artists to show and introduce their work to the public. To enter the lottery, send an email with your name, mailing address, city, state, zip, telephone and email address to firstfifty@artmapburlington.com before January 15th. The first fifty names will be drawn at the January 17th Burlington Artist Meet Up at Kasini House, 64 North Street in Burlington. You must be present when your name is drawn. THE MOUNTAIN LAKE ARTS AUCTION
Now in its 24th year, the Mountain Lake PBS Arts Auction is a showcase for local artists and crafts people as well as an annual opportunity for patrons of the arts to support public broadcasting. This three-day fundraising event of donated, juried art will be broadcast live on our air April 25, 26, and 27 of 2008. Our biggest fundraiser of the year, the Arts Auction grosses over $80,000 on approximately 175 pieces of artwork. All proceeds help fund our local productions. Back by popular demand, the Arts Auction will return with “Adirondack Night” on Sunday, April 27. This special evening highlights arts and crafts found exclusively in the Adirondacks of Northern New York. Regional artists from New York, Vermont and Canada are invited to submit their original works by no later than Wednesday, January 9, 2008. To participate, download and submit a donor form from www.mountainlake.org. For more information, please email artsauction@mlpbs.org

THE SKINNY PANCAKE
The Skinny Pancake is looking for artists to display their work on their walls. They have large spaces for big canvases as well as intimate spaces for smaller pieces. They are looking for art with an ‘organic’ feel to compliment the great natural light and wood throughout their space; abstract and realistic works; art that comments or captures the world around us. Interested? Contact Benjamin Adler at benjy@gmail.com.
