ART NEWS & NOTES
Contemporary Art
at the Shelburne Museum
Shelburne Museum announced their summer line up that will include two contemporary art exhibits. In “Longoland: It May Be Contagious” at the Kalkin House, Brooklyn plush artist Joshua Longo transforms Adam Kalkin’s shipping container house into an imaginative environment inhabited by quirky and cuddly plush animals and furniture inspired by Longo’s playful and off kilter take on the ordinary. At the Vermont House, “Design Rewind: The Origins of Innovation” traces the lineage of contemporary consumer products back to their 18th and 19th century design roots. The exhibition juxtaposes works from the Museum’s extensive decorative arts collection with contemporary pieces by Jason Miller, Tord Boontje, Herman Miller, Hella Jongerius and others. May 18th, when the Museum reopens for the season, can’t come soon enough.

In Residence by Yann Novak
In Residence is the result of three residencies Novak attended in 2007. At his residency at Kasini House in Burlington, Novak composed and performed an Old North End soundscape which is included on this release along with works done at the Espy Foundation in Oysterville and the Satsop Cooling Tower in Elma, both in Washington. In In Residence, Novak pushes his process to the limit by abstracting his source materials beyond recognition. The result is a lonely world with distant sounds passing by the listener. The entire piece quivers with anticipation. In Residence is forty-three minutes and is available on 5” CD-R. The edition is limited to 250. The price is $15 and is available at Kasini House Artshop.
Le Serviette Noir Returns to Gallery 180
Bruce MacDonald’s Le Serviette Noir is a crowning achievement in his exploration of stainless steel wall light sculptures. This 25”x 41” piece was featured at A-forest Gallery (New York City) and Holly Hunt (Washington, DC). Gallery 180 is thrilled to have this piece back to highlight the new collection of Bruce MacDonald’s stainless and fired copper wall panels.
