How to Get on the Cover |
ART ON THE COVER The Drawings of Colinpatrick Charles On the cover this month is a page from Colinpatrick Charles’s book, The Miracle of Creativity That Burns from Within (which is neither miraculous nor burning). The whole thing started when Colinpatrick submitted to the First Fifty exhibition back in February an untitled drawing done with India ink on Strathmore paper. The piece looked more like an etching than a drawing. The lines were precise; the composition dynamic. In the piece, a man frocked in rain gear steers a small boat through the tumultuous waves of a tempest-ridden sea. Around the same time, I got into Artshop some of Holbein’s R Drawing Trip-Minis. These small pads of high-quality artist paper have the distinction of being notched. Each page becomes a 3” by 5” postcard with a mark on the back for a stamp. I gave Colinpatrick one of the R Drawing Trip-Minis and asked him to draw on a couple of them so I could show off how the product could be used in the shop. Fast forward a couple of weeks, Colinpatrick brings in the entire sixteen-page Trip-Mini with each page a filled with a drawing. Together, they told a story in two parts: an old man remembers playing with a toy boat from his youth and after the intermission, the old man tries to remember the boat from his youth. Each drawing is beautifully rendered in a fully-developed style. The images are smart and dynamic; the story, emotionally powerful. We decided to publish Colinpatrick’s series of drawings, not just on the cover of the May issue of Art Map Burlington, but also as a limited-edition book. The drawings are on view at Kasini House starting May 11th. That evening there will be a book launch as well as an artist reception for Px (c) whose Adjacking Series opens that night as well.
