Gregory Giordano a.k.a. FLAMEAPE

On the cover this month is the cover image of another publication: NEW STARS. This snappy little comic is the third anthology by Trees and Hills, a group of cartoonists, writers, and artists who’ve given themselves the goal of uniting cartoonists and other comic creators in New Hampshire, Vermont and western Massachusetts. NEW STARS contains 52 pages of comics by people from New England, all inspired by the 1957 launch of the Sputnik satellite, the first man-made object put into geocentric orbit.

But that is not why the image is on the cover of Art Map Burlington this month. The image is the work of Burlington’s own, Gregory Giordano a.k.a. FLAMEAPE. With over twenty years of experience behind him, Giordano has hit his stride in recent years and is beginning to receive the attention he deserves. In November 2006, he had a show on the second floor of the Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts.

Giordano is currently working on a new comic, HOLIDAY, that is expected to be completed sometime in 2008. The artwork for this project is done in pencil and ink with white paint, scanned, and processed in Adobe Photoshop. From what we’ve seen on the artist’s flickr site, we can’t wait till it’s done. The work has a lush, illustrative quality, a great use of panels and a some smart coloring.
