LOOKING AT ART HOP Falling In Love If you love art, and if you’re reading this I imagine you are at least considering the possibility of romance, then Art Hop is like a giant singles’ resort. The Juried Show in the old Maynard’s Auto Supply building is like the Welcome Cocktail Party. Don’t get too committed to fast. There is a lot of great work in there. Scott Einsig’s latex & acrylic painting, for example, rough graffiti-inspire compositions would be the perfect mate. The night is young and you just arrived. Head over to Pine Street Art Works and check out Connie Imboden’s photographs. Imboden’s moody figurative work is a study of darkness. Her images drip with poetry. Her talent with a camera will dazzle you. Consider the ramifications of falling in love so early. Resist, though it will be hard and pop over to Burlington Hyundai-Subaru for a tailgate party of photography. Be sure to bump into work by Ann Clayton Barlow and shoot a glance at Michael Metz’s colorful light play. If your goal is to fall in love with art, you might need to take a different approach. Jake Rifken has produced a series of remarkable wire sculptures at a residency this summer. You can bump into them at Kelliher Samets Volk and then again at E1 Studios. Smile, giggle, and twirl your hair and they may steal your heart. Like art, falling in love is about looking, but it’s not necessarily the sort of looking one does with their eyes alone. People, like a good painting, must be taken in with the heart and the mind. And that demands a certain level of openness and vulnerability. Art, like people, can break your heart, but, when the moment is right, can also bring you unimaginable levels of joy and ecstasy. You just need to look for it. by RIC KASINI KADOUR |
