ART ON THE COVER Cristine Cambrea Cristine Cambrea uses her inner emotion and intuition to guide her art. For that reason, she calls herself a Visionary artist. Her journey from Spring Valley, New York to Burlington’s South End reflects that vision. As at student at the State University of New York at New Paltz, a painting teacher told her to stop taking art classes in order to avoid her work being “institutionalized and end up looking like everyone else in this class.” She took his advice and in the intervening years, Cristine has worked in painting, pottery and wood in her own, self-taught style. Serendipity is what led Cristine from a life as a craft importer in Montpelier to a life as a professional artist. She quickly discovered that the crafts she imported from Indonesia, Nepal, India and Africa had a much larger market on the Internet than via her store. So much so that she decided to close her brick-and-mortar storefront and sell exclusively on-line. As a way to maintain a supply of stock while she awaited new pieces from her craft suppliers, Cristine began selling her own work on line. As a result, she is now a full-time professional artist with collectors worldwide. Having entered the world of professional art through the “back door” of the Internet, Cristine is now opening a new door, the door of her new studio and gallery in the building that houses the South End Art and Business Association (SEABA) on Flynn Avenue. Unlike a stand-alone shop on a commercial strip, the space at SEABA provides Cristine with neighbors who understand what the creative life is all about. The Grand Opening of Cambrea Stone Gallery is during the 15th Annual South End Art Hop on Friday and Saturday, September 7th and 8th, 5-9PM. As well as showing her work, she is looking forward to enjoying the other art on offer during the Art Hop. Having a studio/gallery and launching during Art Hop will help establish Cristine in the Vermont art community. Although she lives and works here, her collectors and representation are mainly outside of Vermont. She wants all art lovers to know that she will be a staple in Burlington’s South End with the Cambrea Stone Gallery, which will be open during the Art Hop, during the monthly First Friday Art Walk, and by appointment. by CHRISTOPHER BYRNE |
